You’ve Got to Be Kidding Me: Suffering and the Fulfillment of Our Spiritual Potential in Later Life? By Drs. Robert Weber and Carol Orsborn

Later life can bring loss of health, independence, and relationships, and diminishment of valued roles and identities. Such losses contribute to the rise of suicides among baby boomers, due to anxiety, depression and despair. How does society’s anti-aging stance result in missed opportunities for spiritual growth through suffering? This workshop will consider how a spiritual perspective on the experience of suffering offers the potential for a culminating fulfillment of the human spirit.

Objectives:

  • To develop a conceptual practical framework for understanding and encouraging  spiritual growth in later life with attention to diversity;
  • To clarify that the challenges posed by the experiences of suffering in later life offer unique opportunities for the fulfillment of our spiritual potential;
  • To emphasize that spiritual development occurs not in spite of such challenges, but because of them, paradoxically;
  • To elucidate a vision of spirituality that allows you to seek, discover, and realize the opportunities for continued spiritual growth that are inherent in later life;
  • To apply this vision and practice in your own life and in the service of supporting  the spiritual lives of those for whom you care;
